Year One

Welcome to Year One

Miss Whitehead, Mrs Robles and Miss Kent

In Year 1 we introduce the children to the National Curriculum. They follow a structured programme developing independence in their work and play. We aim to provide a safe, secure and most of all a happy environment for every individual child.

Children are taught Phonics every day. It is during this time where the children learn the essential sounds that enable us to read and write.  We study English and Maths daily, and foundation subjects (Science, History, Geography, Music and RE) are taught once a week. Foundation subjects are taught during the afternoon sessions where the children enjoy using a variety of resources to help incorporate learning and fun, and provide exciting opportunities to further their natural inquisitive side. Science is taught in a variety of ways including practical investigations, hands-on activities and use of the interactive whiteboard. Topics include plants, animals, ourselves, light and dark, the environment and materials. Also, the children have one hour a week with our PE specialist to enrich their physical development.

Homework is given out every Wednesday and collected in on Mondays, along with their reading records. Every week we have a 'Star of the Week', who takes ‘Blue’, our class teddy, home for the weekend and records her adventures in a class scrapbook.

Phonics

At St Saviour’s we encourage children to fall in love with reading. We want them to develop a positive attitude towards reading and recognise that it is an important life skill. We hope that children value reading as an enjoyable activity but also understand that they can read for information.

Initially we teach reading through phonics.  At St. Saviour’s we follow GES Simply Letters and Sounds. Children are taught to split words into sounds (segment) and put sounds together to make words (blend).  In Foundation Stage and Year One, children are taught phonics daily. Our phonics lessons follow the same structure across the school.  We also teach ‘tricky’ words which are not phonetically plausible within phonics lessons.  Children are encouraged to use their phonetic knowledge and understanding in reading and writing.  We find that the children are more confident at using a range of engaging vocabulary in their writing thanks to their phonetic skills, knowledge and understanding.

Please find below a list of websites that you can use to help support Phonics learning at home. There is also an attachment below of the presentation used in the Parent Phonic Workshop.
